In March 1827, Schubert was a torch-bearer at Beethoven’s funeral. There were, in fact, 39 other torch-bearers, including the composers, Hummel and Czerny. This is probably a clear statement of Schubert’s position in the Vienna social hierarchy than his relationship with Beethoven. Not much is said about the Beethoven and Schubert ever meeting.

Franz Grillparzer wrote the famous funeral oration, “…No living man enters the halls of immortality…,” which was delivered by the actor Heinrich Anschütz. He had served as a torchbearer at Beethoven's funeral a year before his own death. In 1872, a memorial to Franz Schubert was erected in Vienna's Stadtpark. In 1888, both Schubert's and Beethoven's graves were moved to the Zentralfriedhof where they can now be found next to those of Johann Strauss II and Johannes Brahms.

In fact, a melody written by Schubert in 1827, the same year that Beethoven died, seems to pay hommage to the theme and its composer. It is subtly fitting that he chose the Funeral March Sonata, since the Funeral March has the undertitle “sulla morte d’un eroe” (to the death of a hero), the hero, in Schubert’s world, of course being Beethoven himself:

The distance between Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer, died in his apartment in the Schwarzspanierhaus, Vienna, on 26 March 1827 at the age of 56, following a prolonged illness. It was witnessed by his sister-in-law, possibly by his secretary Karl Holz, and by his close friend Anselm Hüttenbrenner, who provided a vivid description of the event.
